Founded in 1957 by banker/musician Jim Stewart, and later owned by Al Bell, Stax Records would become an embodiment of Memphis soul music. For over twenty years, the converted movie theater/recording studio would infuse black & white musicians to form their house band, attract local and national talent, and unleash hit after hit to rival the genre’s goliath, “Motown.” By the early 1980’s, business/success deteriorated and the building was demolished. However, in 2003, a replica of the iconic studio was resurrected and opened as a museum. Stax Museum now offers countless exhibits and self-guided tours. Admission is very reasonable and hours somewhat vary from Tuesday through Sunday.
