Established in 1967 by legendary producer Chips Moman, American Sound Studios served as a brief landmark in Memphis music. After being demolished years later, the lot now serves as a Family Dollar Store, with a historic marker in the front.


Notable recordings include:

·       Elvis Presley – “In the Ghetto,” “Kentucky Rain,” and “Suspicious Minds”

·       B.J. Thomas – “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head”

·       Merrilee Rush – “Angel of the Morning”

·       Neil Diamond – “Sweet Caroline” (written in a Memphis motel during his stay)

·       Dusty Springfield – “Son of a Preacher Man”

·       Box Tops (local band headed by Alex Chilton) – “The Letter” and “Cry Like a Baby”
